Blessing and Sins

One of the main recurring themes in Bring Me The Horizon’s music is the idea of good and bad and how they are related to religious concepts of blessing and sins.

The concept of blessing in religion can be defined as the infusion of something with holiness, spiritual redemption, or divine will. While on the other hand, in the concept of religion, sin is transgression against the divine law. Sin can be actions, thoughts, words or even acts which are immoral, selfish, shameful, harmful, or alienating.

A lot of songs and the lyrics by Bring Me The Horizon have references and lyrical symbolish to the concept of good and bad and subsequently the idea of blessings and sins.

Some of the examples of the use of religious concept of blessings and sins in Bring Me The Horizon's music is as follows:

Pray For Plagues

“Pray For Plagues” is Bring Me The Horizon’s second music video. The name of their debut album "Count Your Blessings" comes from the lyrics of this song.

Musically, it’s fast, heavy and full of blast beats. The breakout of the deathcore genre is represented by this song and the whole album. Lyrically, this song is completely full of biblical references.

Starting from the idea of cruxifiction of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, to the idea of heaven and hell, the song also mentions the idea of being cast astray. This can be referring to Devil's descent from Heaven or the idea that people are led astray from God's path by the Devil.

Lyrics:

Oh (Oh, oh), cry
(Count your fucking) Blessings
Come on, count your blessings
'Cause I'm counting every lie, count your blessings
'Cause I'm counting every lie, counting every lie
Christ, I'm asking you for just one thing
I'm asking you for just one thing
Eradicate this disease

Close your eyes, pray for plagues
Oh, Lord, cleanse this earth and bring upon our doomsday
Oh, close your eyes, pray for plagues
Cleanse this earth and bring doomsday

Blessed with a Curse

“Blessed with a Curse” is the eleventh and penultimate song from Bring Me The Horizon’s third full-length studio album There Is A Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is A Heaven, Let’s Keep It A Secret.

This song also has some biblical references.

Lyrics:

Ever since this began, I was blessed with a curse
And for better or for worse, I was born into a hearse
