Religious Studies 2812: Religion and Popular Culture:
RELS - 2812 is an online course that focuses on the portrayal and treatment of religion in popular culture. The religious and mythic themes that are usually symbolized and portrayed in popular culture are examined with special focus to tv shows, movies, books and music.
Topic: My proposed topic and title is The Influence of Religion in Bring Me The Horizon’s Music.
My website address is: https://snkabir.wixsite.com/religioninbmth
Issues and themes I will be exploring are:
a) Heaven and Hell – One of the major themes of BMTH’s discography is heaven and hell. BMTH relies heavily on using symbolism and metaphors alluding to heaven or hell to convey their strict message. I will provide different examples of heaven or hell used in the different songs as they relate to organized religion and the context, they are used in.
b) Blessings and Sins – Another recurring topic in BMTH’s discography is the presence of blessings and sins. This correlates directly to the previously mentioned theme; however, this theme is used in many other contexts which I will explore using their songs.
c) Death and Damnation – One of the appeals of BMTH comes from the fact that they produce darker and more nihilistic view-based music and therefore, death and damnation are themes that constantly come up in their music. I will connect this theme with damnation as it relates to Christianity and other organized religion.
d) Symbolism and Imagery – The use of symbolism and imagery is one of the most important things that come up when trying to analyse the influence of organized religion in BMTH’s music. I will use the album art, the music videos and atmosphere and location of the concerts to show this influence.
Argument: The argument that I will make on the website is that Bring Me The Horizon’s effectively uses organized religion symbols and imagery to challenge the stigma between religion and this specific genre of music. As we might understand, that BMTH might not necessarily have these beliefs, however, they ironically or unironically use symbols of religion in their music to provoke reaction from all types of people. Lastly, the presence of this religious symbolism shows how deeply engraved religion is in our society even if the group of people participating do not necessarily believe in them.
Conclusion: I think my website will be able to show and shine light on the influence of organized religion in modern day deathcore genre of music, demonstrated using the band Bring Me The Horizon. The website will show how Bring Me The Horizon uses different religious symbols, myths, events and subsequent beliefs to develop and deliver their music. Bring Me The Horizon challenges the stigma and normalizes the relationship between organized religion and metal music. Successful use of metaphors and symbolism allows us to look at how popular culture is affected by religion.
