Conclusion

Music has the innate ability to add to or deepen the meaning of words that accompany it. Connection between music and religion is not something new and has existed nearly as long as organised religion has existed. In recent times, the connection between music and religion only grew stronger and now it is an integral part of religion. Music has also grown to impact a larger audience over a wider range of beliefs. As a result, we can definitely say that music is a great tool and art form that can be used to boost and potentially improve creative thinking when it comes to religion. Music is an universal part of religion that appeals and affects human ideas and emotions in a positive way. It also allows humans to participate in religious ideas in a more desirable and enjoyable way.

Even though deathcore is a subgenre between metalcore and death metal, it is generally seen in the same light as general metal music. This means that there are a lot of misconceptions regarding deathcore with the most common one being that deathcore is against conventional religions and it promotes satanism. Because of this, using religious themes is very unusual and unconventional in metal music.

Bring Me The Horizon and its members wanted to do something unique and also challenge the conventional methods, the misconceptions and the prejudices against deathcore using their music. As a result, it can be seen that Bring Me The Horizon uses connection to many different religious themes and symbolism to share their thoughts and emotions throughout their music.

Some of the most common themes are:

  • Blessings and Sins

  • Death and Damnation

  • Heaven and Hell

  • Symbolism and Imagery pertaining to religion

All these themes and ideas are referenced throughout their music in forms of both visual aids, lyrical symbolism and visual symbolism. Bring Me The Horizon uses literary devices such as metaphors, similes, allegories, etc as well to develop a more in depth connection between the listener and the idea Bring Me The Horizon is trying to convey.

By using different religious symbols, myths, events and subsequent beliefs to develop and deliver their music, Bring Me The Horizon is able to challenge the stigma and normalize the relationship between organized religion and metal music. The successful use of metaphors and symbolism allows us to look at how popular culture is affected and influenced by religion. Lastly, it also shows us how deeply ingrained music is to popular culture.
