Heaven and Hell
Lastly, the last big concept that Bring Me The Horizon tries to explore is that of heaven and hell that comes as part of the blessing and sins and subsequently death and damnation.
Heaven is a religious supernatural place where gods, angels, souls and saints are said to reside.
Hell is a location in the afterlife in which evil souls are subjected to punitive suffering, most often through torture, as eternal punishment after death.
In the following section, I will present some of their songs which discusses these concepts and ideas of Heaven and Hell through lyrical symbolism.
CRUCIFY ME
“Crucify Me” is the opening and title track of Bring Me The Horizon’s third album There Is a Hell, Believe Me I’ve Seen It. There Is a Heaven, Let’s Keep It a Secret. The song features pop vocalist Lights.
In the three lines it is said, first of all, that there is nothing above and nothing below. This can be interpreted as the idea that there is no life after death. There is no heaven either, paradise above us and not hell below us. The chorus in this same song says just the opposite. There is a Hell. There is a Heaven.
Lyrics:
Crucify me and nail my hands to a wooden cross
There is nothing above, there is nothing below
Heaven and Hell live in all of us
And I've been cast astray
I am an ocean, I am the sea
There is a world inside of me
Lost in the abyss, drowned in the deep
No set of lungs could salvage me
Only a shipwreck, only a ghost
Merely a graveyard of your former self
We just watched the waves crash over
And I've been cast astray
There is a Hell, believe me, I've seen it
There is a Heaven, let's keep it a secret
No one needs to know
Hospital for Souls
“Hospital for Souls” is the last track of Bring Me The Horizon’s fourth album Sempiternal. Sempiternal introduced a change in the band’s musical direction with a different sense of musical atmosphere radiated.
Lyrics:
The days are a deathwish
A witch hunt for an exit
I am powerless
The fragile, the broken
Sit in circles and stay unspoken
We are powerless
Because we all walk alone on an empty staircase
Silent halls and nameless faces
I am powerless
Everybody wants to go to Heaven, but nobody wants to die
I can't fear death, no longer, I've died a thousand times
Why explore the universe when we don't know ourselves?
There's an emptiness inside our heads that no one dares to dwell
Throw me to the flames!
Watch me burn
Set my world ablaze!
Watch me burn
Go To Hell For Heaven's Sake
“Go to Hell, for Heaven’s Sake” is the fifth track of Bring Me The Horizon’s fourth album Sempiternal. It’s written to sound like it is about someone I don’t like and don’t want to have a connection with anymore. This can be just another human or the fact that as OIi grew older he kept moving further and further away from religion and God.
Lyrics:
For the love of God, will you bite your tongue
Before we make you swallow it?
It's moments like this where silence is golden (Golden)
And then you speak
No one wants to hear you
No one wants to see you
So desperate and pathetic, I'm begging you to spare me
The pleasure of your company
When did the diamonds leave your bones?
I'm burning down every bridge we made
I'll watch you choke on the hearts you break
I'm bleeding out every word you said
Go to hell, for heaven's sake
I'm burning down every bridge we made
I'll watch you choke on the hearts you break
I'm bleeding out every word you said
Go to hell, for heaven's sake
Go to hell, for heaven's sake
